Transcript: Controlling Exposure Shutter Speed The Aperture The Shutter The shutter blocks out all light into the camera until you depress the shutter release. At that point, it briefly opens and closes allowing a brief amount of light into the camera. You can control the amount by adjusting the shutter speed. Aperture Settings (F – stops) Shutter Speed Shutter speed viewed on screen Balance Exposure (F stop) shown on screen Exposure is about different combinations of shutter and F-stop settings. These combinations can dramatically affect the quality of the finished picture. Give a stop – take a stop Balance is easy because both are measured in stops, so if you take a stop from aperture, you give a stop to shutter speed and end up with the same exposure Smaller aperture numbers – larger openings Larger aperture numbers – smaller openings In order for an image to be captured it must be exposed to light. The camera has two settings which control light, these replicate the human eye. The shutter and the aperture. Nikon D200 A 1/1000th second exposure is THREE STOPS darker than a 1/125th second exposure Every stop on this table represents a ONE STOP change. Like a pupil in the human eye, the aperture controls the amount of light entering. It does this by closing up to restrict light, and opening up to let it through. Balance Balance Before the light reaches the Charge Coupled Device (CCD which replaces traditional film), it must pass through an opening called the aperture. The aperture is like your pupil. You control the aperture by setting the ‘aperture opening’ also known as an ‘F-stop’. Shutter Speed At 1/250th second, the shutter is fast enough to freeze motion. At f2.8 enough light enters the camera to obtain correct exposure, at the expense of the background. Controlling Exposure Controlling Exposure Balance Shutter Speed Questions? Aperture Settings (F stops) So, if the aperture is small such as f22, then objects in the background and foreground appear sharper. However, since more light was required a shutter speed of ¼ second the subjects become blurred from motion. Larger openings – more light Smaller openings – less light Why is the background blurred in the right picture? Because exposure of f2.8 makes objects further away out of focus – this is known as depth of field. Moving from f16 to f8 is TWO STOPS brighter. Moving from f5.6 to f8 is ONE STOP darker Moving from f4 to f2.8 is ONE STOP brighter Every step in the table = ONE STOP So, what do we learn?? Sometimes it is impossible to obtain exactly the picture that you want. How do we deal with that? Compromise – if the photo is for an ident, then the last picture will do, we’re not that interested in the background. If we are, we can take a shot of the background as well. Longer shutter speeds – more light Slower shutter speeds – less light Camera Work The Aperture The following pictures have been given an equal amount of light, but the F-stop and shutter combinations make each one unique. The Aperture (F Stop) A ½ second exposure is ONE STOP darker than a 1 second exposure. A 1/125th second exposure is TWO STOPS brighter than a 1/500th second exposure Longer exposures (like 1 second) give much more light to the CCD than 1/1000th of a second exposure. As an avid PowerPoint user, I never really found an issue with the app. However, upon finding out about Prezi, I found that it offered a lot more perks such as; free templates, a free unlimited public account, you do not need a credit or debit card for the free trial. Whereas, with PowerPoint you have a free trial but you do need a credit or debit card to sign up and it is very expensive to purchase there after. Brainstorm Main Idea They offer tutorials on how to use Prezi. I love the colors because they grab your attention and hold onto it. It makes creating presentation simple and fast. This is a great new way to step outside the box and experiment. Seems very resourceful. You do not need a credit or debit card for a free trial. It has a wide variety of free templates. Prezi, compared to PowerPoint is free.
