Chosen Job Role: Fashion Designer So what does a Fashion Designer do? You design Fashion, But I'll give you the low down of what Fashion designers are required to do. Design items of clothing for a wide range of retailers Sketch designs by hand or using computer programmes Develop ideas into patterns and making samples Qualifications: You will need a qualification to get to work in a fashion design company. You will usually need a relevant higher education qualification, such as a foundation degree, HND or degree to be a fashion designer. A course that teaches both design (drawing) and technical skills (sewing etc.) will give you the practical knowledge that you need to work in the industry. Skills: a good eye for colour, texture and shape. an understanding of the characteristics of fabrics and how they can be used. technical skills such as pattern cutting and sewing. the ability to spot and develop trends. drawing skills. the ability to use computer design packages.
