Transcript: What is Health Informatics? - The assessment, treatment, and monitoring of patients who are located at greater distances from their healthcare providers via a video conference This includes telemedicine, tele-education, and telenursing 1) Based on the handout (or from your own experiences in clinical), identify some positive aspects of Nursing Informatics. So what does this mean for nurses? - A collection of all of an individual’s interactions with the healthcare system which is available electronically to health care professionals anywhere in the country - Also called "Digital Health" Using information technology, electronic communication tools, and services to deliver adequate healthcare services to citiziens - Examples: Setting up a network to share health info amongst designated health care providers (revieving lab work via technology rather than by paper work) Having an electronic form of a patient's info is more efficient than paper copies for those using various healthcare services (family physician, pharmacists, speacialists, etc.) - Electronic access to healthcare records is also part of telehealth What is Nursing Informatics? - It is time efficient as well as economically beneficial - A specialty field involved with the integration of nursing science, information science, and computer science for the management and communication of information, knowledge, wisdom, and data in nursing practice - Supports and furthers the application of computers in practice, education, administration, and research of nursing Purpose: improve health of populations, communities, families, and individuals through the optimization of information management and communication Health Informatics 4) What are careers for RNs in the feild of nursing informatics? Benefits: Available 24/7 Accessible when patients are at their most vulnerable state Challenges: Patient privacy and confidentiality Disclosure of a patient's personal information is permitted only in most stringent cases (ie. if asked by law enforcement) Health & Nursing Informatics Group 4 - The Stars (Lana, Michelle, Samantha) Activity Discussion Electronic Health Records Electronic Records Aim: to develop and improve the organization/management of information leading to the improvement of the overall quality care of patients, families, caregivers, & the general public. -A discipline that intersects healthcare delivery, compuer science, and information technology Please see handout for the list of our references. - Health informatics focuses on the care of the client instead of the professional discipline of the caregiver. It refers to the use of information and communication technology, including both hardware and software, combined with information management concepts and ways to support the delivery of care. Nursing Informatics Telehealth 2) What are the potential negative aspects of Nursing Informatics? References THANK YOU! - The role of the nurse is expanded from the monitoring of patients and treatment to include understanding and working with technological applications, which are now essential to care. - Nurses now have instant access to information ex) Electronic Health Records, Online Personal Health Record (available to the pt. anywhere) 3) Give some examples of the technology that nurses/nursing students are using and how this technology is being used in the clinical settings

Transcript: Pervasive Development Disorders (PDD) Four types of Pervasive Development Disorders: The term "Pervasive Development Disorders"(PDD), refers to a group of conditions that involve delays in the development of many basic skills, especially the ability to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination. Children with these conditions often are confused in their thinking and generally have problems understanding the world around them. 2. Asperger's syndrome - It is same as Autism, This condition is what doctors called as "high-functioning" type of Autism. This means the symptoms are less severe than other kinds of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They have difficulty in concentrating and may have poor coordination. Somehow children with Asperger's Syndrome have average or above average intelligence. 4. Rett syndrome - is a severe brain disorder that affects girls. They suffer problems with physical development and the loss of many movement skills such as walking and use of their hands and develop poor coordination. This condition has been linked to a defect on the X chromosome, so it almost always affects girls. 3. Childhood Disintegrative Disorder - also known as Heller's syndrome, it is a condition in which children develop normally through age 3 or 4. Then, later on after a few months, they lose language, motor, social, and other skills that they already learned. 1. Autism - Children that have problems with social interaction and both verbal and non verbal communication. Research shows that genes may be involved since Autism runs in some families. Certain medicines taken during pregnancy may also lead to Autism in the child. Signs and symptoms tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. HEALTH INFORMATICS Prepared by: Ashley Jane N.
