CompuServe was founded in the 60's as the first major online service provider. Bulletin Board Systems was a way to send simple messages. AOL to this day has 20 million active users. Website based systems include; GeoCities, theGlobe, and Tripod. GeoCities is part of Yahoo. Early Profile based systems include; Classmates, MySpace. Classmates was a way to reconnect with old college classmates. MySpace was a way to keep in touch with friends and family as well as make new friends. history Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. It is a social media site, used to stay in touch with friends and family Twitter was founded by jack dorsey in 2006 as a social media platform to keep up with important issues. Linkedin was founded by Reid Hoffman and his team in 2002. Linkedin is a professional site used to find jobs and connect with like mined people. Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin Steps to create an account To create an account for Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin one needs an email address and that is all. It helps to have a phone that way one could better secure their account. However, all one needs is a computer with internet access and an email address. A person will need to user either their real name or a nickname and create a password to access their account. How to create an account How to log onto your social networking site The steps to log onto your social networking site is pretty simple. One will need to remember their user name and password. In some cases your user name is your email address, this is how Linkedin works. If one forgets their user name or password they can reset it by typing in their email or phone number. How to log onto your social networking site Pro's of online social networking There are many pros to online social networking. Some of these pros are; keeping in touch with friends and family that live far away. A major pro of sites such as Linkedin is the ability to connect with people in your profession who can help you further into your career. Social networking has professional advantages as well as social advantages. Another pro is for small businesses, they can advertise on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Pros Cons of online social networking sites. There are however, cons when it comes to online social networking sites. For one, they can damage a persons professional image. For example, a person post something controversial on their Facebook page thinking nothing of it, however it can hurt their job. Many employers look through employees social networks to make sure they are keeping it professional. I however believe the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to online social networking sites. New users are signing up at the rate of 300,000 per day. 180 million unique visitors come to the site every month. 75% of Twitter traffic comes from outside Twitter.com (i.e. via third party applications.) Twitter gets a total of 3 billion requests a day via its API. Twitter users are, in total, tweeting an average of 55 million tweets a day. Twitter's search engine receives around 600 million search queries per day. Of Twitter's active users, 37 percent use their phone to tweet. Over half of all tweets (60 percent) come from third party applications. Twitter itself has grown: in the past year alone, it has grown from 25 to 175 employees.
