GOALS Is a struggle between people, which may be physical, or between conflicting ideas. The word comes from Latin ‘conflingere.’ Conflingere means to come together for a battle. Conflicts can either be within one person, or they can involve several people or groups. Conflicts arise because there are needs, values or ideas that are seen to be different, and there is no means to reconcile the dispute. Conflict.... WHAT IS CONFLICT Deeper level of empowerment & understanding Recognize the inevitability of conflict and it’s potential to generate positive outcomes Ownership of outcomes – fix systems not people Define Conflict in New Ways... OPPORTUNITY “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” - Martin Luther Why... " One or more parties to the conflict are frustrated because there needs or goals are thwarted or not being met. If they could arrive at a solution to the problem, the conflict would go away. (Fisher & Ury, 1981 ‘Getting to Yes’) A Problem to be Solved Theories There is an imbalance in a relationship. This causes upset of some kind, such as anger or sadness. These strong emotions have people feeling weak and unable to recognize the other person and his or her needs. This in turn, escalates the conflict, as both parties feel less and less heard. In order to resolve the conflict, each person has to gain clarity about his or her feelings, perspective and what they truly want. This clarity empowers the person enabling strength to recognize the other person and his or her needs. (Bush & Fogler, 2005 ‘The Promise of Mediation’) A Crisis in Human Interaction Based on postmodern philosophy, this theory holds that people create meaning from language and experience and because each person is unique, with a unique perspective, conflict is inevitable. From this view there is no one truth, but many realities occurring at the same time. In order to resolve conflict, people need to deconstruct what they see as the only truth and construct a new story which includes different perspectives and options for outcomes. (Winslade & Monk, 2001, ‘Narrative Mediation’) Constructed by Others “Our most profound and lasting ideas regarding conflict were forged in our families of origin.” Anatomy of Conflict When someone is having a strong emotional response to something, chances are they are responding to a past hurt. In most conflict... Inside Conflict This is a critical point where you can dive headlong into a heated argument. Transcript: United Methodist Church BY: MADELON HUMPHREYS All information is from umc.org Origins of the UMC The United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 Unlike other Christian branches, the UMC was actually created when two churches merged Creation Who Merged? While 1968 is the offical date of the merge, Methodism dates back to the 1700's. Methodism was started by John and Charles Wesley Around the same time, Philip Otterbein and Martin Boehm began the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, which is part of the Evangelical United Brethren Church The Methodist Church and the EUBC united to make the UMC. Who Merged? Why did they decide to merge? Some Methodist churches had been wanting to reunify since the early 1920's. They agreed on human rights during the mid 1900s and they realized how much they actually had in common Why Merge? Some differences in the UMC and the Roman Catholic Church Differences The UMC uses the Apostles' Creed, but not the Nicene Creed. During Reconciliation, their is no priest involved; the sins go from the sinner to God Women can be ordained and the UMC also accepts gay or lesbian clergy members Many Members All Around the World There are over 12 million members of the United Methodist Church (there are about 80 million Methodists around the world) The UMC is in mission in about 136 countries Members & Location Will the UMC reunify? Reunification? The UMC is just getting over a schism The UMC now fully approves same-sex marriage A "traditional" Methodist church is branching off because they don't approve of LGBTQ+ in their church Since the United Methodist Church is starting new practices that don't agree with the Catholic church, reunification doesn't seem to be in the near future
